Cabral, Tânia C. B.; Baldino, Roberto Ribeiro – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2019
By using Shlomo Vinner's credit system concept, we show that summative assessment is a rather vague and underrepresented notion in mathematics education literature. The emotional drive behind this article is expressed in the following questions: How is it possible to look for concrete exclusionary school practices that qualify some and disqualify…

Misfeldt, Morten; Johansen, Mikkel Willum – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2015
Developing abilities to create, inquire into, qualify, and choose among mathematical problems is an important educational goal. In this paper, we elucidate how mathematicians work with mathematical problems in order to understand this mathematical process. More specifically, we investigate how mathematicians select and pose problems and discuss to…

Stylianou, Despina A. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2011
Representation is viewed as central to mathematical problem solving. Yet, it is becoming obvious that students are having difficulty negotiating the various forms and functions of representations. This article examines the functions that representation has in students' mathematical problem solving and how that compares to its function in the…

Peer reviewedFreudenthal, Hans – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
Problems in mathematics education as a social activity are the major focus of this document. Paragraphs that describe major problems in mathematics education point out at least eleven major issues as seen from the author's perspective. (MP)

Gueudet, Ghislaine – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2008
The secondary-tertiary transition has been studied in a great amount of research in mathematics education, adopting different focuses and theoretical approaches. I present here how these focuses led the authors to identify and study different students' difficulties and to develop different means of didactical action. Individual, social, but also…

Peer reviewedAle, Sam O. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
The current problems of school and university mathematics as they relate to teachers in Nigeria are considered. Massive expansion in mathematics teacher education programs is viewed as necessary to solve the difficulties detailed. (MP)

Peer reviewedLangford, Peter E. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
An alternative explanation is presented for the pattern of relative difficulty of arithmetical word problems to that suggested in a 1983 article. It is argued, that for many problems, much of the symbolic manipulation is accomplished externally, not internally. (MNS)

Peer reviewedSvenson, I. F.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1983
The development and use of a taxonomy for describing the way distance students plan work and use course materials to complete mathematics exercises is detailed. The taxonomy was developed from an exploratory study but the initial results are viewed as having implications for educational use in many situations. (Author/MP)

Peer reviewedKieran, Carolyn – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
The concept of equivalence is shown to be an elusive one that provides difficulty for preschoolers through college students. The idea persists that the equal sign is a "do something," or operator symbol, rather than a symbol for an equivalence relation. (MP)

Peer reviewedSpan, Pieter; Overtoom-Corsmit, Ruth – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
Gifted secondary students not only solved problems better, faster, and with less assistance than average pupils, but also processed information in a different fashion. (MNS)

Peer reviewedVollrath, Hans-Joachim – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
The mental activities involving functions were studied with 60 children aged 4-15. Search strategies used for solving a problem reveal different stages toward the discovery of the monotonic property, which correspond to stages of proportional reasoning found by Piaget. Dependence between stage and age is confirmed. (Author/MNS)

Peer reviewedLemoyne, G.; Tremblay, C. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
This study involved 48 students ages 9 to 12. The 29 experimental group students, divided into small groups, performed learning exercises designed to improve skills in analyzing and processing expressions frequently included in addition and multiplication problems. The exercises helped significantly to improve problem-solving performance. (MNS)

Peer reviewedGalbraith, P. L. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
The processes and perceptions of pupils in the mathematical processing of proofs are examined in clinical interviews of secondary school pupils. Analysis of the data led to the identification of clusters of characteristic response types. (MP)

Peer reviewedMatthews, Julia – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
This study covers 11-year-olds, school leavers, student nursery nurses, and bus conductor trainees, and their understanding of subtraction, and whether shortcomings in understanding and performance that occurred at ages six or seven would continue in later years and affect feelings toward the subject. (MP)

Speiser, Bob; Walter, Chuck; Glaze, Tiffini – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2005
In this paper, we discuss issues in planning and conducting research into mathematics learning. We emphasize two central themes: (a) the learners mathematics (especially the issues and ideas, in given problem situations, that learners' choose to think about and to present) and (b) the kinds of knowledge that learners may be building (including…
