Prevention Interviews: Listening with Intention
Benson, Jeffrey
Educational Leadership, v79 n2 p68-72 Oct 2021
This article discusses the prevention interview, a one-to-one interview with a student, asking open-ended questions. Prevention interviews help educators learn about the whole young person to build trust that allows for new solutions for recurring problems. Prevention interviews also work well when done soon after a student has made poor behavior choices, to prevent further incidents and prevent a conflict-filled teacher-learner relationship from forming. The author provides answers to three questions teachers often ask about incorporating prevention interviews into their work: (1) When can I find time?; (2) What should I ask?; and (3) How should I respond?
