Citizen Science: Getting More Involved with Science
Leeder, Poppy
Education in Science, n256 p24 May 2014
One of the things that this author enjoys most about working at the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the science that she finds out about and the researchers she meets. Having loved science throughout school and then on into university, the author is always keen to learn more. The increase in citizen science projects over the last few years has been really useful. Not only has it allowed the author to play a role in gathering scientific data, but it also helps her to get science funded by NERC into schools and to encourage young people to take part in real research. Citizen science is getting citizen's involved in science projects. In this article, the author discusses the Big Bumblebee Discovery Project, which has been launched by NERC's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, along with some other ways that the NERC funds can be taken into the classroom to inspire, enthuse, and challenge.
