Translating the Art of Citizenship
Shaw, Mae; Martin, Ian
Convergence, v38 n4 p85-100 2005
In this paper, the authors develop a conceptual framework for exploring the notion of "translating the art of citizenship." They then consider two particular examples from their work as university teachers which illustrate how they are trying to translate the art of citizenship by developing a more expressive pedagogy of citizenship. First, a CD called "Heart, Mind and Soul: Songs for Learning" which has been produced to commercial standards as a pedagogical resource for adult learning and civic education. Second, a university undergraduate course on "Arts and Community Action" in which students are encouraged both to understand and demonstrate how the creative arts can be used to invigorate citizens and activate citizenship.
