Origins and development of a computerized credit transfer system for students in the University of Wisconsin system is described. The Registrar at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, reviewed the student records system, a data base structure using IBM's IMS package. Over 13 interviews were conducted to determine use of the system, problems, and suggestions. An estimated $50,000 could be saved annually by adoption of recommendations. (SW)

Current trends in new technology, including computer registration, the development of computerized Student Information Systems, the use of remote terminals, and other automated methods to assist student and curricular problems are reviewed. A passive computer application using student course transcripts to group and arrange specific degree requirements to produce an advising worksheet is described, and the language used by a math department for this purpose is outlined. Thirty-three universities were surveyed by the University of Arizona to see who was responsible for the process of evaluating students' remaining degree requirements, how much of this process was automated or computerized, and who in each institution responds to the Higher Education General Information Survey.
