Analyses of the success-failure rates and user reactions using four public access online systems indicate that users overwhelmingly preferred the online to manual systems. Improved subject access emerged as the salient feature requiring improvement. Seven references are included. (Author/RAA)

Humanistic scholars need simple access to jargon-free information on databases in an academic library setting. Many private databases in the humanities are being developed, creating a need for standardization to enable scholars beyond disciplinary boundaries to communicate and benefit from each others' research. The administrator of the library of the future will be concerned with costs of new services, while the scholar will see a knowledge explosion within his or her own lifetime. Librarians must help scholars stay informed of new developments in their respective disciplines and teach them new techniques to access materials. (CDD)
