A study of college fund-raising effectiveness involved two stages: to determine the fund-raising potential for each of 200 sample institutions, and to compare fund-raising techniques and policies between overproductive and underproductive colleges. (MLW)

A study on foundation grant patterns, which found that certain types of institutions get more gifts--and larger ones--than do others, is described. A study of corporate giving patterns to Northwestern University supported two long-held beliefs about fund-raising. Those beliefs are that extensive cultivation and substantial corporate ties increase giving. However, the study discredited the beliefs that the old-boy network and extensive alumni contacts increase giving. (MSE)

Data collected by Group Attitudes Corporation as part of a nation-wide survey of public attitudes toward higher education is discussed. Twenty-six percent of all respondents who had been to college said that they had made some sort of donation to the undergraduate institution they attended. (MLW)
