Kissane, Barry – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2017
It seems that calculators continue to be misunderstood as devices solely for calculation, although the likely contributions to learning mathematics with modern calculators arise from other characteristics. A four-part model to understand the educational significance of calculators underpins this paper. Each of the four components (representation,…

de Mestre, Neville – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2010
All common fractions can be written in decimal form. In this Discovery article, the author suggests that teachers ask their students to calculate the decimals by actually doing the divisions themselves, and later on they can use a calculator to check their answers. This article presents a lesson based on the research of Bolt (1982).
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Computation, Mathematics Instruction, Calculators

O'Neill, M. J. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1985
Computation errors that may occur by expanded use of calculators are discussed. Potential errors with five exact arithmetic examples are described as they are translated into approximate processes. (MNS)
Descriptors: Algebra, Calculators, Computation, Error Patterns

Kissane, Barry V. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1978
An activity is described for introducing some fundamental notions in inferential statistics to students in elementary high school statistics courses. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Instruction, Learning Activities

Stephens, Max – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1978
Some materials are examined which try to cultivate skills and concepts such as estimation, approximation, significant digits, place value, and repeating decimals. Also discussed are repercussions and longer term implications on the use of minicalculators. (MP)

Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1978
A set of recommendations from a group of mathematics and science professional associations are presented for essential and desirable features in calculators for use by pupils in secondary schools. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Guidelines, Opinions

O'Neill, M. J. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1986
Some limitations of computing with calculators and computers are described, with particular reference to typical computations which might be performed by senior secondary school students. Types of errors, the laws of number, and intermediate round-offs are each illustrated, with conclusions and implications. (MNS)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Computer Oriented Programs, Error Patterns

Hannah, Max; Henry, Bruce – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1981
A unit on the division of decimals by decimals that used electronic calculators as a teaching aid is described. The learning package created, the operation of the project, and several outcomes are presented. The results strongly indicated that mathematics can be taught using a calculator. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Decimal Fractions, Division

Cooper, Tom – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1984
This section contains four worksheets for games on estimation. Impact, Crossfire, Fire One, and Fire Two each require the use of calculators to focus on place value, multiplication, or division. (MNS)
