Bilker, Warren B.; Hansen, John A.; Brensinger, Colleen M.; Richard, Jan; Gur, Raquel E.; Gur, Ruben C. – Assessment, 2012
The Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) is a 60-item test for measuring abstract reasoning, considered a nonverbal estimate of fluid intelligence, and often included in clinical assessment batteries and research on patients with cognitive deficits. The goal was to develop and apply a predictive model approach to reduce the number of items…

Drozdick, Lisa Whipple; Cullum, C. Munro – Assessment, 2011
Assessment of functional status is an important aspect of clinical evaluation. As part of the standardization of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Edition (WMS-IV), participants completed the Texas Functional Living Scale (TFLS), a measure of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. The…

Girard, Todd A.; Axelrod, Bradley N.; Wilkins, Leanne K. – Assessment, 2010
This investigation assessed the ability of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III) short forms to estimate both index and IQ scores in a large, mixed clinical sample (N = 809). More specifically, a commonly used modification of Ward's seven-subtest short form (SF7-A), a recently proposed index-based SF7-C and eight-subtest…

Beaujean, A. Alexander; Firmin, Michael W.; Michonski, Jared D.; Berry, Theodore; Johnson, Courtney – Assessment, 2010
This study assessed trait validity of the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales' (RIAS) Verbal Index (VIX) and Nonverbal Index (NIX) scores in a group of college students. Using both observation of patterns and latent variable modeling of a multitrait-multimethod correlation/covariance matrix, the results indicate that the RIAS VIX scores…

Peer reviewedThompson, Anthony; Browne, Janet; Schmidt, Fred; Boer, Marian – Assessment, 1997
The validity of a four-subtest short form of the third edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) and the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) was evaluated with 42 adolescent offenders. Findings support the clinical use of the short form as a good estimate of WISC-III full-scale IQ. (SLD)

Peer reviewedKush, Joseph C.; Watkins, Marley W. – Assessment, 1997
The factor structures of the 10 Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III core subtests were studied with 161 black students receiving special education services. Results provide evidence of a large first principal factor as well as the expected verbal and performance factors. Implications for psychologists are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedJohnson, Nancy E.; And Others – Assessment, 1994
Development of an alternate form of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices Test is described. Reliability analysis with 449 children of differing racial/ethnic backgrounds showed good reliability and comparable predictive validity. The alternate form is a promising research tool. (SLD)

Etherton, Joseph L.; Bianchini, Kevin J.; Ciota, Megan A.; Greve, Kevin W. – Assessment, 2005
Reliable Digit Span (RDS) is an indicator used to assess the validity of cognitive test performance. Scores of 7 or lower suggest poor effort or negative response bias. The possibility that RDS scores are also affected by pain has not been addressed thus potentially threatening RDS specificity. The current study used cold pressor-induced pain to…

The construct validity of a supplemental scoring system for the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) was evaluated with 146 referred school-age children (aged 6 to 12.5 years) and the K-ABC normative sample. Results support the construct validity of only part of the scoring model. (SLD)
