What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Peer reviewedBennett, Randy Elliot; And Others – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
The relationship of an expert-system-scored constrained free-response item type to multiple-choice and free-response items was studied using data for 614 students on the College Board's Advanced Placement Computer Science (APCS) Examination. Implications for testing and the APCS test are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedDodd, Barbara G. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
Using one simulated and two real data sets, the effects of the systematic variation of the item-selection procedure and the stepsize method on the operating characteristics of computerized adaptive testing (CAT) for instruments with polychotomously scored rating scale items were studied. The six rating scale CAT procedures used performed well.…

Peer reviewedDe Ayala, R. J. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
A computerized adaptive test (CAT) based on the nominal response model (NR CAT) was implemented, and the performance of the NR CAT and a CAT based on the three-parameter logistic model was compared. The NR CAT produced trait estimates comparable to those of the three-parameter test. (SLD)

Peer reviewedLord, Frederic M. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1977
Under given conditions, conventional testing and computer-generated repeatable testing (CGRT) are equally effective for estimating examinee ability; CGRT is more effective for estimating the mean ability level of a group and less effective for estimating ability differences among individuals. These conclusion are drawn from domain-referenced test…

Peer reviewedLord, Frederic M. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1977
A broad-range tailored test of verbal ability, appropriate at any level from fifth grade upwards, is briefly described. The test score places persons at all levels directly on the same score scale. (Author/RC)

A Feedback Control Strategy for Enhancing Item Selection Efficiency in Computerized Adaptive Testing
Weissman, Alexander – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2006
A computerized adaptive test (CAT) may be modeled as a closed-loop system, where item selection is influenced by trait level ([theta]) estimation and vice versa. When discrepancies exist between an examinee's estimated and true [theta] levels, nonoptimal item selection is a likely result. Nevertheless, examinee response behavior consistent with…

Peer reviewedCory, Charles H. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1977
This article presents predictive validity data for on-job performance for a set of computerized Graphic and Interactive Processing (GRIP) tests in conjunction with data for both experimental paper-and-pencil and operational tests. Validity coefficients for job element and global criteria are reported for four different jobs. (See also EJ 161 400).…

Peer reviewedAnd Others; Mann, Irene T. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
Several methodological problems (particularly the assumed bipolarity of scales, instructions regarding use of the midpoint, and concept-scale interaction) which may contribute to a lack of precision in the semantic differential technique were investigated. Results generally supported the use of the semantic differential. (Author/JKS)

van der Linden, Wim J. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2006
Two local methods for observed-score equating are applied to the problem of equating an adaptive test to a linear test. In an empirical study, the methods were evaluated against a method based on the test characteristic function (TCF) of the linear test and traditional equipercentile equating applied to the ability estimates on the adaptive test…

Peer reviewedSamejima, Fumiko – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1977
The accuracy of estimation of the subjects' latent ability maintained by tailoring for each testee the order of item presentation and the border of item dichotomization was compared to the information provided by the original graded test items. (RC)

Peer reviewedvan den Bergh, Huub – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
In this study, 590 third graders from 12 Dutch schools took 32 tests indicating 16 semantic Structure-of-Intellect (SI) abilities and 1 of 4 reading comprehension tests, involving either multiple-choice or open-ended items. Results indicate that item type for reading comprehension is congeneric with respect to SI abilities measured. (TJH)

Peer reviewedPrestwood, Stephen J. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
Undergraduate students were administered one of three conventional or one of three stratified adaptive vocabulary tests with or without knowledge of results. Results indicated that knowledge of results and test difficulty affected performance. (Author/JKS)
