It's Time to Bring Students into the Conversation about Student Success
Blaich, Charles; Wise, Kathleen
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v53 n6 p4-11 2021
How do students define success? Surely, they have many of the same goals as policy makers and institutional leaders, but maybe they are aiming for something more. Since students are partners in higher education, the authors thought it was important to learn what they had to say. This led to a student success project for the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS). HEDS is an organization of about 165 nonprofit colleges and universities that collaborate to advance undergraduate liberal arts education, inclusive excellence, and student success. There are two goals for the project: (1) to find out more about the ways that students think about their post-college success; and (2) to use what is learned to shape the work of HEDS on student success. Across both face-to-face conversations and surveys, students' ideas about a successful life focused on a combination of meaningful work, financial security, fulfilling relationships, and balance.
