Concussion and the Student's Return to the Classroom
Stokes, Lindsey I.; Hampton, Kari
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v90 n4 p21-31 2019
The physical, mental and emotional effects of a concussion vary from one individual to another. Concussion symptoms can affect a student's ability to participate in physical activity and academics. To ensure the proper recognition and care of a concussion, along with the necessary return-to-activity and return-to-learning procedures, the educator must work with the parents, healthcare providers, school personnel, and the student regarding the proper sequence of care and implementation of the return-to-learn policy. The physical educator has a vital role in monitoring and managing the student's success in the classroom post-concussion. The purpose of this article is to not only provide awareness regarding the prevalence of concussions in multiple age groups, but also provide resources for the educator to use in the recognition of a concussion, referral process, and facilitation of the student's return to the classroom. The information presented in this article is intended for educational purposes only and should not substitute medical advice provided by a healthcare provider.
