This case study researched how two Joliet, Illinois, Corsini 4R (C4R) magnet schools function for the purpose of measuring their effectiveness as an alternative learning paradigm to public school education. In C4R schools, students learn the four R's: Responsibility, Respect, Reasourcefulness and Responsiveness. Data generated from classroom observations and informal interviews with counselors, administrators, and teachers, and classroom observations support Blank's (1984) three generalizations about effective magnet schools: administrative flexibility, commitment to theme, and strong leadership from principals. The data also shows a fit between the C4R approach and the magnet school approach. In addition, the research confirms that the C4R approach is an effective way of monitoring and encouraging learning.
