Peer reviewedEdward, Norrie S. – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1997
Examines computer based simulations of practical laboratory experiments in engineering. Discusses the aims and achievements of lab work (cognitive, process, psychomotor, and affective); types of simulations (model building and behavioral); and the strengths and weaknesses of simulations. Describes the development of a centrifugal pump simulation,…
Descriptors: College Students, Computer Simulation, Engineering, Higher Education
Peer reviewedStuer, Gunther; Broeckhove, Jan; Arickx, Frans – Internet Research, 2003
Presents the design and implementation of a reliable multipeer protocol (RMPP), which is written in Java and is suitable for applications in the area of distributed virtual environments (DVEs). Discusses motivation, protocol classification, design goals and the error recovery algorithm and lists implementation issues. Presents two possible…
Descriptors: Computer Networks, Computer Simulation, Computer System Design, Design Requirements
Peer reviewedVeenman, M. V. J.; Prins, F. J.; Elshout, J. J. – Computers in Human Behavior, 2002
Discusses conceptual knowledge acquisition using computer simulation and describes a study of undergraduates that examined the role of metacognitive skillfulness and intellectual ability during initial inductive learning with a complex computer simulation. Results showed that metacognitive skillfulness was positively related to learning behavior…

Peer reviewedUmesh, U. N.; Mishra, Sanjay – Psychometrika, 1990
Major issues related to index-of-fit conjoint analysis were addressed in this simulation study. Goals were to develop goodness-of-fit criteria for conjoint analysis; develop tests to determine the significance of conjoint analysis results; and calculate the power of the test of the null hypothesis of random data distribution. (SLD)

Peer reviewedLathrop, Richard G.; Williams, Janice E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
A Monte Carlo study determined the Inverse Scree Test's shape with various numbers of true groups and under different conditions of distribution shape and sample size. Six simulated distributions of 3,000 subjects each and 1 with 1,500 were created. Findings suggest relative distribution independence, number independence, and modest…
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, Computer Simulation, Factor Analysis, Graphs
Shibli, M. Abdullah – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1990
Describes a two-stage experiment that was designed to explain binomial distribution to undergraduate statistics students. A manual coin flipping exercise is explained as the first stage; a computerized simulation using MINITAB software is presented as stage two; and output from the MINITAB exercises is included. (two references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Courseware, Experiments
Peer reviewedMartin, T. Patrick; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1990
Describes a model for the workload of a full text retrieval system and of a simulation model for a version of an existing system called Full/Text. The effectiveness of various data caching strategies using the 2 models are explored, and the impact of various parameters on the strategies are evaluated. (13 references) (LRW)

Peer reviewedFolk, Valerie Greaud; Green, Bert F. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1989
Some effects of using unidimensional item response theory (IRT) were examined when the assumption of unidimensionality was violated. Adaptive and nonadaptive tests were used. It appears that use of a unidimensional model can bias parameter estimation, adaptive item selection, and ability estimation for the two types of testing. (TJH)

Peer reviewedGarcia-Perez, Miguel A.; Frary, Robert B. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1989
Simulation techniques were used to generate conventional test responses and track the proportion of alternatives examinees could classify independently before and after taking the test. Finite-state scores were compared with these actual values and with number-correct and formula scores. Finite-state scores proved useful. (TJH)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Computer Simulation, Guessing (Tests), Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedTurner, Elise H.; Cullingford, Richard E. – Discourse Processes, 1989
Explores a method of combining convention and intention by representing conversation structure with conversation MOPs (schematic structures that store conversation rules as generalized episodes associated with goals the episodes achieved). Discusses how conversation MOPs process the opening portion of a dialogue in an interactive advice-giving…
Descriptors: Cognitive Structures, Communication Research, Computer Simulation, Discourse Analysis
Peer reviewedAtherton, Jonathan; Buriak, Philip – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1988
The purpose of this study was to determine differences in learning outcomes of students taught computer applications through supervised laboratory instruction versus video simulation. No differences were observed for time required to complete an application, proper use of commands, or retention of the learned application. (Author)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Simulation, Delivery Systems, Higher Education
Peer reviewedKingsbury, G. Gage; Zara, Anthony R. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1991
This simulation investigated two procedures that reduce differences between paper-and-pencil testing and computerized adaptive testing (CAT) by making CAT content sensitive. Results indicate that the price in terms of additional test items of using constrained CAT for content balancing is much smaller than that of using testlets. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Comparative Analysis, Computer Assisted Testing, Computer Simulation
Okamoto, Toshio; And Others – Educational Technology Research, 1994
Describes the architecture of a distributed, networked, multimedia learning environment for macroeconomics, which employs gaming and simulation methods. Details include a conceptualization of the system and discussion of its function and structure. (JKP)
Descriptors: Computer Games, Computer Networks, Computer Simulation, Computer System Design
Peer reviewedGokhale, Anu A. – Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, 1991
Four groups of 24 undergraduates each received the following instruction on logic circuits: (1) lab, then readings; (2) computer simulation, then readings; (3) readings, then lab; and (4) readings, then simulation. Results showed that advance exposure to experiential activity (lab or simulation) aided the learning of unfamiliar technical material…

Peer reviewedSharf, Richard S.; Lucas, Margaretha – Counselor Education and Supervision, 1993
Developed Computerized Counseling Simulation, simulation of client-counselor interaction. Tested simulation on seven groups with varying degrees of counseling experience: counselors, predoctoral counseling interns, counseling students, first-year counseling students, student peer counselors, undergraduates, and noncounselors (total n=108). Interns…
