Parkhurst, Barbara G.; MacEachron, Marion P. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1980
Two pilot studies investigated the accuracy of a computer parsing system for analyzing written language of deaf children. Results of the studies showed good agreement between human and machine raters. Journal availability: Elsevier North Holland, Inc., 52 Vanderbilt Avenue, New York, NY 10017. (Author)

Derouza, Eros; Fleming, Matthew – Journal of Computing in Higher Education, 2003
Compared undergraduates who took online quizzes using Mallard with students taking traditional paper-and-pencil quizzes. Found that Mallard students performed significantly better on in-class exams than non-Mallard students. (EV)

Woodfield, Kay – T.H.E. Journal, 2003
Describes the adoption of Internet-based testing that measures growth following a study of statewide testing procedures in Idaho. Discusses the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001; comparing paper and pencil tests with computerized testing; measurement techniques; how data from tests is used; and timeliness. (LRW)

Veldkamp, Bernard P.; van der Linden, Wim J. – Psychometrika, 2002
Examined the case of adaptive testing under a multidimensional response model with large numbers of constraints on the content of the test and items selected using a shadow test approach. Illustrated the procedure with five different cases of multidimensionality that differ in the numbers of ability dimensions and test structure with respect of…

Adema, Jos J.; van der Linden, Wim J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
Two zero-one linear programing models for constructing tests using classical item and test parameters are given. These models are useful, for instance, when classical test theory must serve as an interface between an item response theory-based item banking system and a test constructor unfamiliar with the underlying theory. Stocking, Martha L.; Lewis, Charles – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1998
Ensuring item and pool security in a continuous testing environment is explored through a new method of controlling exposure rate of items conditional on ability level in computerized testing. Properties of this conditional control on exposure rate, when used in conjunction with a particular adaptive testing algorithm, are explored using simulated…

Lunz, Mary E.; Bergstrom, Betty – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1995
Describes a study that was conducted to track the effect of candidate response patterns on a computerized adaptive test. The effect of altering responses on estimated candidate ability, test tailoring, and test precision across segments of adaptive tests and groups of candidates is examined. (Author/LRW)

Austin, James T.; Mahlman, Robert A. – Journal of Career and Technical Education, 2000
Administrative office technology assessments were delivered via the Internet to 141 vocational students. Compared to 61 who took a paper test, scores for the Internet group were significantly higher; 62% preferred the Internet format. There were few problems with accessing, downloading, taking, and submitting the test. (SK)

Rozencwajg, Paulette; Corroyer, Denis – Intelligence, 2002
Studied strategy development in a computerized task developed from the block design task of S. Kohs (1923). Results for 90 subjects aged 12, 17, and adult show 3 strategies: global, analytic, and "synthetic." Discusses some age differences and implications for recent work in cognitive and developmental psychology. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Adults, Age Differences, Computer Assisted Testing
Casbarro, Joseph – Principal, 2005
The author breaks down the debate over high-stakes testing into three politically charged issues: how test scores are used as a means to reform schools; whether test designs and passing scores truly reflect students' abilities; and how public perception of schools can be unfairly based on test results alone.

Lilley, Mariana; Barker, Trevor – Electronic Journal of e-Learning, 2007
In this paper we report on research related to the provision of automated feedback based on a computer adaptive test (CAT), used in formative assessment. A cohort of 76 second year university undergraduates took part in a formative assessment with a CAT and were provided with automated feedback on their performance. A sample of students responded…

Piotrowski, Michael – Online Submission, 2009
This dissertation questions the common assumption that e-learning requires a "learning management system" (LMS) such as Moodle or Blackboard. Based on an analysis of the current state of the art in LMSs, we come to the conclusion that the functionality of conventional e-learning platforms consists of basic content management and…
