Van Deun, Katrijn; Heiser, Willem J.; Delbeke, Luc – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2007
A multidimensional unfolding technique that is not prone to degenerate solutions and is based on multidimensional scaling of a complete data matrix is proposed: distance information about the unfolding data and about the distances both among judges and among objects is included in the complete matrix. The latter information is derived from the…

Peer reviewedJones, Russell A.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1989
The stability of dimensions extracted from a body of free response data was studied using 1,523 expressions of concern and questions raised by 271 elderly persons and analyzed by 2 groups of experimenters. The structures of resulting multidimensional configurations obtained by the 2 groups were identical. (SLD)

Peer reviewedGliner, Gail; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1983
Exploratory multidimensional scaling and confirmatory nonparametric procedures were used to represent data from similarity rating and sorting tasks on nine animal names administered prior to and following the reading of two stories using those names as main characters. Changes in structure were related to authors' intent. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedLaPorte, Ronald E.; Voss, James F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Multidimensional scaling was used to study the comprehension of prose. Undergraduates rated the similarity of twenty nouns before and after reading passages containing those nouns. Results indicated that the scaling analysis provided an effective valid indicator of prose representation. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedVonk, Roos; Heiser, Willem J. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
A study involving 11 male and 11 female inhabitants of Leiden (Netherlands) tested the hypothesis that a subject's judgments of the personality of unfamiliar target persons correspond better with the subject's Implicit Personality Theory than do judgments of the personality of familiar persons. The results confirm the hypothesis. (TJH)

Peer reviewedDenison, Daniel R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
Structural equation modeling is applied in conjunction with constrained monotone distance analysis. These alternative methods are used in an evaluation of a social-psychological model derived from Likert's theory of organizational behavior. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedRosenfeld, Barry; Turkheimer, Eric – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1995
Analysis of the pairwise preferences of pairs of gambling stimuli elicited from each of 40 chronic schizophrenic inpatients, 32 schizophrenic outpatients, and 33 siblings or parents of these patients indicates that choice behavior was usually determined by the expected value of the stimuli, with no significant differences among groups. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWest, Mary Ann – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
INDSCAL analysis, based on bipolar ratings of physically agressive incidents by 217 subjects, yielded a solution in three dimensions: Provocation by Target, Intimates vs. Strangers and Harmful Outcome. One bipolar scale, the Right-Wrong Scale, was used as a direct measure of subjects' moral evaluation of each incident. (Author/LMO)

Peer reviewedHale, Robert L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
This investigation analyzed the diagnostic utility of subtest scores in differentiating between underachieving children and children who were adequately achieving. The use of derived classification equations from group statistics in individual diagnosis led to dramatic levels of misclassification among underachieving students. (Author/CTM)

Peer reviewedNoma, Elliot; Smith, D. Randall – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1985
Correspondence analysis can provide spatial or clustering representations by assigning spatial coordinates minimizing the distance between individuals linked by a sociometric relationship. These scales may then be used to identify individuals' locations in a multidimensional representation of a group's structure or to reorder the rows and columns…

Peer reviewedReynolds, Thomas J.; Sutrick, Kenneth H. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1988
Cognitive Differentiation Analysis (CDA) represents a method to measure the correspondence of an individual vector or a composite vector of descriptor ratings to a matrix of pair-wise dissimilarity judgments where both sets of judgments are assumed to be ordinal. The zero intercept regression extension of CDA is described. (TJH)

Peer reviewedMiller, Donald M.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
Two techniques compose a new methodology for studying certain classes of qualitative information: the F-sort task for data collection and latent partition analysis for data summarization. A detailed presentation is given of its application to a study of teacher's views of facilitating student learning in the classroom. (Author/LMO)

Peer reviewedMarsh, Herbert W.; Richards, Gary E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
The factorial structure of the Rotter Internal-External (IE) scale was examined. While there was strong evidence against the unidimensionality of the Rotter scale, the findings suggested that the first-order factors do define a single higher-order construct that may represent the generalized IE construct. (Author/LMO)

Peer reviewedLeutner, Detlev; Weinsier, Philip D. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
An interest questionnaire with 72 university course descriptions based on a facet design was used to determine whether computer anxiety or computer disinterest was related to interest in or willingness to take selected courses of 200 Belgian and German students. Analysis of variance supports conclusions from the multidimensional scalings. (SLD)

Peer reviewedGustafsson, Jan-Eric; Balke, Gudrun – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
Relations between aptitude variables and school achievement were investigated using a model of ability that permits simultaneous identification of general and specific abilities. Subjects were 866 Swedish students who were given aptitude tests in grade 6; results of that test were compared with course grades collected in grade 9. The usefulness of…
