This booklet summarizes recent information on the current health status and service needs of America's children. The booklet is intended to present sentinel health measures in a readily accessible and readable format to illustrate what has been accomplished for children and to identify what challenges remain. The booklet's four sections cover: general population data (population of children, children in poverty, family composition, working mothers, child care, and school dropouts); data for selected health status measures such as mortality, hospitalization, child abuse, and teenage sexuality, organized by developmental stages (infancy, childhood, and adolescence); information on health services utilization, such as health care financing, physician visits, hospital utilization by income, prenatal care, and immunization; and State-specific data on infant health, including mortality and prenatal care, low birth weight, and births to women under 18 years of age.
