This paper describes and analyzes population trends in countries in the Caribbean which were British colonies before the move to independence. It begins by examining past trends in each of the major components of population change, mortality, fertility, and international migration. Following this is a summary of the assumptions that have been used in recent population projections and the base data they have utilized. The projections of the total population of each country of the region, and of the region as a whole, are given, along with the age-sex breakdown of the projected populations and the implications for school enrollment, manpower, and dependency. (The projections considered are two sets prepared by the United Nations, and one set published by the Population Reference Bureau.) Next, the paper offers a summary of information, derived from recent in-depth analyses, of trends and patterns in fertility. And finally, there is a discussion of the needs of the expected increased population for an equivalent total food supply. (KH)
