Analyzing Demographic Differences during the Evaluation of an Online Course about Inclusive Teaching
Cardace, Amy; Ivanchikova, Melina; Mishra, Sneha
Assessment Update, v35 n4 p6-7, 14-15 Jul-Aug 2023
This paper focuses on a small quantitative piece of data from a larger mixed-methods evaluation project. These data were collected over multiple iterations of an online course developed for faculty about inclusive teaching. Participants rated their agreement with statements about their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Specifically, the authors aimed to understand how survey responses differed between demographic groups, to consider how to best serve diverse learners. One set of item statements addressed learning objectives that were used in designing the course, and another set addressed participants' agreement about universities or courses having responsibility for meeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals. The examples presented in this paper show how using a simple statistical analysis helped the authors answer important DEI questions about their course design and ongoing program evaluation.
