This paper develops the argument that using the Double ABC-X model in family and consumer sciences (FCS) curricula is a way to educate nutrition and dietetics students regarding a family's perceptions of food insecurity. The Double ABC-X model incorporates ecological theory as a basis to explain family stress and the resulting adjustment and resiliency of families. By understanding a family's initial response to stress and subsequent adaptation, FCS students will be better prepared to help families manage the stress of many of life's challenges, including food insecurity. The intent is that families will be able to integrate both resources and management skills within the context of their environment to cope with various stressors, especially food insecurity.
