Pasty Asamoah; John Serbe Marfo; Matilda Kokui Owusu-Bio; Daniel Zokpe – Education and Information Technologies, 2024
In this brief we shift the current academic integrity conversation from "detecting and preventing plagiarism" to "examining how plagiarized contents can be corrected with an objective knowledge of the number of words to modify and properly acknowledged". We proposed a simple, yet useful and powerful mathematical model that is…

Richard F. Melka; Hashim A. Yousif – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2023
In application-oriented mathematics, particularly in the context of nonlinear system analysis, phase plane analysis through SageMath offers a visual display of the qualitative behaviour of solutions to differential equations without inundating students with cumbersome calculations of the plane-phase. A variety of examples is usually given to…

Peabody, Michael R. – Measurement: Interdisciplinary Research and Perspectives, 2023
Many organizations utilize some form of automation in the test assembly process; either fully algorithmic or heuristically constructed. However, one issue with heuristic models is that when the test assembly problem changes the entire model may need to be re-conceptualized and recoded. In contrast, mixed-integer programming (MIP) is a mathematical…

Verschaffel, Lieven; Schukajlow, Stanislaw; Star, Jon; Van Dooren, Wim – ZDM: The International Journal on Mathematics Education, 2020
Word problems are among the most difficult kinds of problems that mathematics learners encounter. Perhaps as a result, they have been the object of a tremendous amount research over the past 50 years. This opening article gives an overview of the research literature on word problem solving, by pointing to a number of major topics, questions, and…

International Electronic Journal of Mathematics Education, 2018
This paper discusses a proposal for exploration and verification of numerical and algebraic behavior correspondingly to Generalized Fibonacci model. Thus, it develops a special attention to the class of Fibonacci quaternions and Fibonacci octonions and with this assumption, the work indicates an investigative and epistemological route, with…

Noll, Jennifer; Clement, Kit; Dolor, Jason; Kirin, Dana; Petersen, Matthew – ZDM: The International Journal on Mathematics Education, 2018
Initial research has shown that simulating data from models created with computer software may enhance students' understanding of concepts in introductory statistics; yet, there is little research investigating students' development of statistical models. The research presented here examines small groups of students as they develop a model for a…

Anderson, Jeffrey A.; McCusker, Michael V. – PRIMUS, 2019
We present a new learning activity that enables students to apply eigenvalue theory to investigate a practical modeling problem. We demonstrate how to build a spring-coupled pair of pendula and describe how students can measure the movements of these pendula using open-source image processing software. We then illustrate how to analyze this…

Tobin, Patrick C.; Weiss, Vida – International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, 2016
The use of handheld CAS technology in undergraduate mathematics courses in Australia is paradoxically shrinking under sustained disapproval or disdain from the professional mathematics community. Mathematics education specialists argue with their mathematics colleagues over a range of issues in course development and this use of CAS or even…

Liu, Leping; Maddux, Cleborne D. – Computers in the Schools, 2008
This article presents a study of Web 2.0 articles intended to (a) analyze the content of what is written and (b) develop a statistical model to predict whether authors' write about the need for new instructional design strategies and models. Eighty-eight technology articles were subjected to lexical analysis and a logistic regression model was…

Woldbeck, Tanya – 1998
This paper outlines two types of discriminant analysis, predictive discriminant analysis (PDA) and descriptive discriminant analysis (DDA). Important differences between PDA and DDA are introduced and discussed using a heuristic data set, specifically indicating the portions of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) output relevant…

Brown, Roger L. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1997
Reviews the use of structural equation modeling for providing an overall assessment of mediation, the mechanism that accounts for the relation between the predictor and the criterion. A strategy for supplemental details is presented that measures the magnitude of mediational effects. (SLD)

Wood, Phillip – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Two Statistical Analysis System (SAS) macros are presented that perform the modified principal components approach of L. R. Tucker (1966) to modeling generalized learning curves analysis up to a rotation of the components. Three SAS macros are described that rotate the factor patterns to have characteristics Tucker considered desirable. (SLD)

Huberty, Carl J.; Lowman, Laureen L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1997
Predictive discriminant analysis and descriptive discriminant analysis are described, and the use of three popular statistical packages to obtain computational results for each type of discriminant analysis is reviewed. Results from two Biomedical Computer Program (BMDP), four Statistical Analysis System, and two Statistical Package for the Social…

Chant, David; Dalgleish, Lenard I. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
A Statistical Analysis System (SAS) macro procedure for performing a jackknife analysis on structure coefficients in discriminant analysis is described together with issues and caveats about its use in multivariate methods. An example of use of the SAS macro is provided. (SLD)

Nandakumar, Ratna – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
The capability of the DIMTEST statistical test in assessing essential unidimensionality of item responses to real tests was investigated for 22 real tests of at least 25 items and 700 or more examinees. DIMTEST results on real tests were able to discriminate between essentially unidimensional and multidimensional tests. (SLD)
