Lepper, Tracy L.; Petursdottir, Anna Ingeborg; Esch, Barbara E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
We evaluated the effects of operant discrimination training (ODT) on the vocalizations of 3 boys with autism. We compared ODT to a stimulus-stimulus pairing (SSP) condition and a control condition in an adapted alternating-treatments design. ODT increased the target vocalizations of all participants compared to the control condition, and its…

Harrison, Antonio M.; Pyles, David A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
We evaluated verbal instruction and shaping using TAG (teaching with acoustical guidance) to improve tackling by 3 high school football players. Verbal instruction and shaping improved tackling for all 3 participants. In addition, performance was maintained as participants moved more quickly through the tackling procedure.

Polick, Amy S.; Carr, James E.; Hanney, Nicole M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2012
Descriptive praise has been recommended widely as an important teaching tactic for children with autism, despite the absence of published supporting evidence. We compared the effects of descriptive and general praise on the acquisition and maintenance of intraverbal skills with 2 children with autism. The results showed slight advantages of…

Ingvarsson, Einar T.; Hollobaugh, Tatia – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2011
We compared the efficacy of tact-to-intraverbal (i.e., using picture prompts) and echoic-to-intraverbal transfer-of-stimulus-control procedures to establish intraverbal responding in 3 boys (4 years old) with autism. For all 3 participants, the picture prompts resulted in fewer trials to criterion, but both prompting tactics were eventually…

Verbal Mediating Responses: Effects on Generalization of Say-Do Correspondence and Noncorrespondence
Lima, Edhen Laura; Abreu-Rodrigues, Josele – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2010
We analyzed the effects of verbal mediating responses on the acquisition and generalization of say-do correspondence and noncorrespondence. Participants were assigned to groups in which either reinforcers (feedback and tokens) were arranged for say-do correspondence and noncorrespondence, or no reinforcers were programmed. Participants in these…

Cummings, Anne R.; Carr, James E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2009
We evaluated the influence of two different frequencies of data collection on skill acquisition and maintenance within behavioral treatment programs for children with autism spectrum disorders. Six children were taught multiple skills in up to four different behavioral programs. Half of the skills were measured continuously (i.e., trial by trial),…

Rosales, Rocio; Stone, Karen; Rehfeldt, Ruth Anne – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2009
The effectiveness of a behavioral skills training (BST) package to teach the implementation of the first three phases of the picture exchange communication system (PECS) was evaluated with 3 adults who had no history teaching any functional communication system. A multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effectiveness…

Peer reviewedMatson, Johnny L.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1993
Three children (ages 4-5) with autism and mental retardation were treated for deficits in self-initiated speech. A treatment package employing visual cue fading was compared with a graduated time-delay procedure. Both treatments included training multiple self-initiated verbalizations using multiple therapists and settings. Both treatments were…
