Tyburski, Brady A.; Drimalla, James; Byerley, Cameron; Boyce, Steven; Grabhorn, Jeffrey; Moore, Kevin C. – North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2021
The fields of quantitative and covariational reasoning boast a wide range of powerful theoretical tools, which are described carefully in the literature. Less frequent and explicit attention, however, has been paid to writing down detailed, practical guidance for operationalizing these theoretical constructs. Some guidance is provided by…

Connelly, Jeffrey; Garcia, Pablo – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2023
Helping students reach a clear understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship between changes in parameter and the graph of an equation is the focus of the activity outlined in this article. The behavior of phase shifts has been regarded as counterintuitive for many people, and often, because of this, conflict between student intuition and…

Boucher, Chris – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2018
This note presents a derivation of Viète's classic product approximation of pi that relies on only the Pythagorean Theorem. We also give a simple error bound for the approximation that, while not optimal, still reveals the exponential convergence of the approximation and whose derivation does not require Taylor's Theorem.

Webb, David Christopher – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2022
Even though K-12 mathematics educators have embraced the role of graphing calculators and computers, student use of technology in tertiary mathematics has been slow to implement in the USA context. Enter March 2020, a global health crisis, and the shift to online and remote learning. The immediate and dramatic cessation of in-person modes of…

Hiroto Namihira – IGI Global, 2024
Academic scholars face a difficult challenge when attempting to grasp the intricate world of mathematics. The complexity of mathematical concepts often lies hidden beneath layers of formulas and procedures, obscuring their true essence. Traditional educational resources often fall short in conveying the profound meaning behind these concepts,…

Linhart, Jean Marie – PRIMUS, 2019
This article describes a method for using the United States Census data to open a differential equations course. The question of finding a model for the United States population data gives students a first experience with creating a model using differential equations, and also understanding derivatives, what they mean, and how to calculate them in…

Livingston, Colleen – PRIMUS, 2019
This paper describes an activity using a dog treat ball to introduce systems of first-order differential equations. Beads are placed in the first of two hemispherical chambers of a food-dispensing dog toy. As the ball is turned, students track the number of beads in the first chamber, the second chamber, and the exterior of the ball. Students…

Ravi, M. S. – Australian Mathematics Education Journal, 2021
This article shows how the exciting new field of Machine Learning can be effectively introduced in a standard calculus sequence, once the students have been introduced to functions of several variables. This is an opportunity to engage students in a discussion of an application of calculus to an emerging field that the students encounter in their…

David, Erika J.; Hah Roh, Kyeong; Sellers, Morgan E. – PRIMUS, 2020
This paper offers instructional interventions designed to support undergraduate math students' understanding of two forms of representations of Calculus concepts, mathematical language and graphs. We first discuss issues in students' understanding of mathematical language and graphs related to Calculus concepts. Then, we describe tasks, which are…

Dahma, Alfred M.; Long, Valerie N.; Flowers, Timothy B. – PRIMUS, 2022
This article describes the revision of a Business Calculus course at a medium-sized, northwestern university. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the need for a redesign of the Business Calculus course, conversations among math and business faculty about the course changes, the development of the new course, and the addition of a…

Cunningham, Daniel W. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2018
Modern calculus textbooks carefully illustrate how to perform integration by trigonometric substitution. Unfortunately, most of these books do not adequately justify this powerful technique of integration. In this article, we present an accessible proof that establishes the validity of integration by trigonometric substitution. The proof offers…

Atkin, Keith – Physics Education, 2018
This paper examines the Torricelli law for the flow of liquid from a small drain hole in a container. It shows how the system can be modelled using either a traditional calculus-based approach or a non-calculus step-wise computer method appropriate to the background of the student group. An experiment to measure the head of out-flowing liquid as a…

Behroozi, F. – Physics Teacher, 2018
When a chain hangs loosely from its end points, it takes the familiar form known as the catenary. Power lines, clothes lines, and chain links are familiar examples of the catenary in everyday life. Nevertheless, the subject is conspicuously absent from current introductory physics and calculus courses. Even in upper-level physics and math courses,…

Rizzo, Ottavio G. – Education Sciences, 2021
What do you do when a change in enrollment policies leaves you with more than 600 students in a first-term university calculus class, three-quarters of those students had a failing mark in mathematics in the pre-enrollment test, you planned a series of remedial activities for the second term, and the COVID-19 pandemic shuts the university down…

Shelton, Therese; Laurent, Theresa; Agyemang-Barimah, Beulah – PRIMUS, 2019
We present adaptable activities for models of drug movement in the human body -- pharmacokinetics -- that motivate the learning of ordinary differential equations with an interdisciplinary topic. Specifically, we model aspirin, caffeine, and digoxin. We discuss the pedagogy of guiding students to understand, develop, and analyze models,…
