Dalgleish, Lenard I.; Drew, Elisabeth C. – Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal, 1989
This paper operationally defines a set of indicators for the decision to separate the child and family in child abuse cases. Application of the indicators to 152 cases of suspected child abuse in Australia found that severity of abuse, parenting, and the family social system were most predictive of a final separation outcome. (Author/DB)

Peer reviewedJones, W. P. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1991
A model is proposed for the clinical synthesis of data from psychological tests of persons with visual impairments. The model integrates the concepts of the ideal type and Bayesian probability and compares actual test scores with ideal scores through use of a pattern similarity coefficient. A pilot study with Business Enterprise Program operators…

Rest, James R. – 1987
Findings from research studies that use the Defining Issues Test (DIT), a test of moral judgment development, are described. These findings are relevant to three major questions in higher education research: (1) the question of student outcomes (i.e., what does college experience do for and to people?); (2) the question of the relevance and…

Campbell, William E.; Doan, Henry M. – 1982
A model and implementation process is presented for projecting student headcount and credit hour and contact hour enrollment for each academic area and all areas aggregated by semester and fiscal year for each campus of Montgomery College, Maryland. The projection model is suggested as a managerial tool to assist the college's management to…
Descriptors: College Students, Credit Courses, Credits, Enrollment Projections
Van Epps, Pamela D. – 1987
This paper discusses the principles underlying discriminant analysis and constructs a simulated data set to illustrate its methods. Discriminant analysis is a multivariate technique for identifying the best combination of variables to maximally discriminate between groups. Discriminant functions are established on existing groups and used to…
Descriptors: Classification, Correlation, Discriminant Analysis, Educational Research
Hilliard, Asa G., III – 1982
Reuven Feuerstein's Learning Potential Assessment Device and Instrumental Enrichment (LPAD/IE) system presents a valid approach to assessment, which moves from constructs, to pedagogical theory, to instruments, and to remedial strategies. This system uses standardized tests in a standard approach, but not for the purpose of the quantification of…

Boyd, Vivian S.; And Others – 1981
The literature and typical approaches to reducing attrition among college students are critiqued, and a strategy for the identification of different interventions likely to have positive effects on retention rates of different student subgroups is proposed. It is claimed that a small sample approach to empirical testing of the combinations of…

Peer reviewedBerg, David J.; Hoenack, Stephen A. – Journal of Higher Education, 1987
Cost-related tuition can increase efficiency in higher education and in the labor markets it serves, and provide fiscal gains for individual institutions, depending on enrollment demands. Cost-related tuition and its possible effects are explained and the University of Minnesota's experience in implementing this policy are described. (Author/MLW)

Halpern, Sheldon; Rosenblum, Jesse H. – Currents, 1986
The spreadsheet can be a powerful tool in marketing. Using a spreadsheet and admissions data, models can be built for: periodic reports of admission status, projections of the size and quality of the incoming class, and long-term recruitment strategy. (MLW)

Byrkett, Donald L. – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1983
Discusses ways to integrate computers into mathematically oriented classes effectively so that advantages are obtained without increasing detrimental effects. Three sections detail use of computers as experimental tools, to implement and understand algorithms, and to solve realistic size problems. These ideas are illustrated with examples from a…

Peer reviewedWedman, Ingemar – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1981
Describes a procedure, called a full Bayesian procedure, for making decisions in connection with criterion-referenced measurements. The procedure uses continuous utility functions instead of a dichotomized utility structure and combines the posterior distribution for a certain person with utility functions for "advance" and "retain" decisions…

Gursky, Daniel – Teacher Magazine, 1992
One professor of education's solution to the shortage of qualified urban teachers is an urban teacher selection interview that predicts would-be teachers' professional potential in the classroom. Peer reviewedBuonora, Paul T.; Yu Jin Lim – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A method designed to facilitate prediction of mechanism and products by developing critical thinking skills and reducing memorization is presented. The mechanistic disc method requiring students to utilize their understanding of charge stabilization, structural organic chemistry, and the fundamental mechanisms of aliphatic substitution and…

Ivey, Miriam R.; And Others – 1993
The majority of depressive symptoms, prevalent among adults (without a history of a depressive disorder) entering alcohol treatment, usually abate within 2 to 3 weeks of abstinence without specific depression-focussed intervention, but some hospitalized alcoholics experience significant depressive symptoms despite sustained abstinence. Such…
