The primary objective of the concierge service at the University of Nevada, Reno is to keep students on track to graduate in four years. The Concierge is charged with helping students enroll in the classes they need, not necessarily want, to graduate. This one charge defines the operational criteria. The service is available to all students, freshmen through seniors. It embraces new, continuing, returning, and transfer students. The service is not intended to help students reorganize a schedule that already includes the classes they need. Again, its task is to help students continue to progress to graduation rather than create the perfect schedule. In an environment of decreasing state budgets and the consequent impact on higher education funding, students are facing increasing scheduling challenges. Growing enrollment and a commitment to reducing time-to-degree exacerbate the situation. Despite these constraints, the institution has made a commitment to students that they will have access to the classes they need to graduate, or to make reasonable progress towards graduation. To meet this commitment the university established the Course Concierge service. The service is housed in the office of the executive vice-president and provost. It provides essential support for faculty and professional advisors struggling to find the time and resources to help students deal with the more challenging scheduling conflicts and find access to chronically full classes.
