Roots of the Current Crises (Hate to Say I Told You So)
Mortenson, Thomas G.
New England Journal of Higher Education, Jan 2021
After 50 years studying opportunity for higher education, the author is somewhat comfortable (and very uncomfortable too) stating the issues he has sought to address and warned about that underlie the current political chaos. The failure to address these issues (higher education included) have boiled over: (1) income inequality has been surging unchecked for decades; (2) men's lives have been falling apart since the end of World War II; (3) higher education is the engine of division, enriching the rich and leaving everyone else out; (4) as a matter of public policy, selective college admissions should be replaced with a random draw lottery for admissions; and (5) education used to be thought of as an investment in the future.
