School Climate Factors 2009. Research Brief. Volume 0807
Froman, Terry
Research Services, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Each school year, the School Climate Survey is administered to gather information on the perceptions that students, their parents, and school staffs hold concerning their schools and their performance. In 2008-2009, the survey was distributed to approximately 90,200 parents, 54,200 elementary, secondary, and adult students, and 25,000 staff. In addition to providing information to the public, survey results are intended to assist schools in the identification of priorities for their annual School Improvement Plans, and to track trends for the Districtwide Scorecards. This year, in an effort to make the data more readily accessible to district administrators, the Department of Research Services is providing this special School Climate Factors report. A factor analysis was performed on each of the survey form types (Staff, Student, and Parent) separately. Examining the correlations among the survey items revealed that there was significant overlap among various subgroups of items--questions about school administrators tended to correlate with each other, questions about safety issues correlated with each other, and so on. The statistical procedure objectively revealed the number and composition of the underlying factors for each survey. It was then possible to combine the scores from the common items into summary factor scores. To best understand what the factors represent conceptually, one need only refer to the items that were combined to produce the factor scores which are presented in tables at the end of the report.
