Moshe Stupel; Jay M. Jahangiri – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2025
In this article, we state an interesting geometric conservation property between the three angle bisectors of three similar right triangles and provide a proof without words for its justification. A GeoGebra applet is also presented to help with the understanding of the progression of the proof from inductive to deductive stage.

Abboud, Elias – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2023
In this article, we consider certain minimization problems. If d[subscript 1], d[subscript 2] and d[subscript 3] are the distances of a boundary or inner point to the sides of a given triangle, find the point which minimizes d[subscript 1][superscript n] + d[subscript 2][superscript n] + d[subscript 3][superscript n] for positive integer n. These…

Robert J. Fisher – Chemical Engineering Education, 2025
Strategies are proposed that promote use of an Integrated Applied Mathematics (IAM) approach to enhance teaching of advanced problem-solving and analysis skills. Three scenarios of 1-dimensional transport processes are presented that support using Error Function analyses when considering short time/small penetration depths in finite geometries.…

McCartney, Mark – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2021
An elementary method to calculate the area, centroid and volume of rotation of the Koch curve is presented. Classroom extensions are provided to allow students to investigate the method used.

Miškovic, Vladimir – Australian Mathematics Education Journal, 2021
In the third of a series, the author describes how symmetrical quintic functions can be expressed in three equivalent formats--like other symmetrical functions. Quadratic functions have a line of symmetry through their vertex and cubic functions have 1800 rotational symmetry around their point of inflection. However, polynomial functions of degree…

Lozada-Cruz, German – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2021
This note deals with some variants of the integral mean value theorem. Mainly a variant of Sahoo's theorem and a variant of Wayment's theorem were proved. Our approach is rather elementary and does not use advanced techniques from analysis. The simple auxiliary functions were used to prove the results.

Wares, Arsalan – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2020
In this article, the author describes an occurrence of the golden ratio in the context of regular hexagons. The method described can be used to construct the golden ratio. This is one of many ways one can construct the golden ratio.

Joana Conceição; Margarida Rodrigues – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2024
Can You Build It? is an engaging Improve It! task that asks children to construct 3D shapes based on 2D depictions. Students' initial 3D creations often need revision, and as they build and re-build, they develop spatial relationships. This task was implemented in a first-grade class, connected to composing 3D geometric shapes to address the…

Heather A. Bleecker; Jacob Ascencio; Ely Goklish – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2025
Teaching diverse student populations effectively requires implementing thoughtfully planned and flexible rich tasks and understanding a community's strengths so students can make meaningful connections to mathematics. Using a culturally relevant teaching approach can develop appropriate geometry vocabulary to support students in articulating their…

Martin A. Simon – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2025
Mathematical concepts have been a consensus goal for decades, yet there is little consensus on what is meant by the terms "mathematical concept" and "mathematical understanding." This article attempts to discuss these terms in a way that can be of practical use to teachers. Greater clarity on "mathematical concept"…

Williams, David M.; Walters, Gage S. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2021
The purpose of this article is to provide an explicit formula for the bounds of integration of the regular simplex centred at the origin. Furthermore, this article rigorously proves that these integration bounds recover the volume of the regular simplex. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that such integration bounds have been…

Oxman, Victor; Sigler, Avi – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2021
In this article we consider two triangles: one inscribed in another. We prove that the area of the central triangle is at least the harmonic mean of the areas of corner triangles. We give two proofs of this theorem. One is based on Rigby inequality and the other is based on the known algebraic inequality, to which we bring a new, geometric, proof.…

Xu, Yanhui – Australian Mathematics Education Journal, 2023
This paper describes a model of mathematics bianshi teaching using one problem with several solutions, changes, and applications in an inquiry-based classroom. Based on the model of mathematics bianshi teaching, the author discusses a class-room experience where one Chinese mathematics teacher takes a simple plane geometry problem to guide…

Linda Saeta – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2025
This article outlines a series of lessons the author led to help students understand gerrymandering, which is the practice of drawing district boundaries to favor a particular group or party and which undermines the fairness of a representative democracy. These lessons were developed to capture student interest and engagement by linking…
