Advances have been made in testing optometrists' clinical skills, particularly with the use of simulation techniques. Further research into these techniques will probably receive the most attention, although a shift in research emphasis from correlational studies of test validity and reliability to test development studies is needed. A working definition of optometry is given, and four areas for evaluation of clinical competency are outlined: the abilities to develop professional interpersonal relationships with patients and colleagues, determine the specific procedures, and interpret and use clinical data. Written tests do not project clinical optometric competence very well at present. However, the basic skills and knowledge necessary for competence can be measured, even if diagnostic and treatment skills cannot by current means. (MSE)
