The Newbery and Caldecott Awards: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books. 2000 Edition.
Each year the Newbery and Caldecott Medals are awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's books published the previous year. With its annotations for all winning titles and honor books since the inception of the awards (Newbery in 1922 to be awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children and Caldecott in 1938 awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year), librarians can use and rely on this guide for collection and curriculum development, reader's advisory and other programs. As in recent editions, the 2000 edition includes background on the awards and photos of the new medalists and their books. Although the Caldecott Award is one of the most recognized awards in all of literature, few people know much about the illustrator it memorializes. For this 2000 edition, Rita J. Smith, curator of the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature, contributed an essay on Randolph Caldecott. At the end of the book is a section that includes notes toward a definitive list of media used in Caldecott Award-winning titles from 1938-2000. Contains author/illustrator and title indexes. (AEF)
