Health education programs for older adults can be an efficient and cost-effective way to meet the challenge of a healthy old age. This directory describes 36 health education programs for the rural elderly in the areas of comprehensive programs, mental health, nutrition, physical health (including exercise), medication, safety, and health consumerism. Comprehensive programs contain a combination of components addressing at least the areas of mental health, exercise, and nutrition. Most programs were developed for rural areas, or reviewer comments suggest rural adaptations. Within the seven categories are four programs specifically developed for a minority audience and two others that offer translated versions or components. The program profiles are abbreviated descriptions of the major characteristics and components of each program. Each profile contains the date the program was developed or published; an abstract; curriculum content; setting for which the program was designed; implementation, funding, and evaluation information; reviewer comments; and source for program materials.
