The preface describes the context for application, e.g., a guide for development of local standards of apprenticeship in the transfer of skills by the journeyman to the apprentice, the UAW journeyman acts as an on-the-job trainer, and although application of apprenticeship programs differs among the various industries, there are similarities in basic job skills. The approved standards are listed under 20 headings: Definitions, equal opportunity in apprenticeship, apprenticeship eligibility requirements, credit for previous experience, term of apprenticeship, grace period, hours of work, ratio, discipline, wages, related instruction and school attendance, local joint apprenticeship committee, coordinator of apprentices, consultants, seniority, apprenticeship agreement, certificate of completion of apprenticeship, tool allowance, approval and modification of standards, and safety. Federal laws affecting the employment of apprentices and the apprenticeship agreement are summarized, and a list of Federal regional offices and State and territorial agencies for apprenticeship is included.
