Investigation of Interactive Technologies for a Risky Behaviors Program for Mildly Mentally Handicapped Youth. Final Report--Phase I.

The study reported in this document investigated the feasibility of using an interactive multimedia computer environment to build the information base and decision-making skills of mildly mentally handicapped youth with the aim of combatting drug abuse behaviors. This report covers phase 1 of a projected 3-phase study. Its four chapters provide a general overview, a description of phase 1 activities, a description of the design plan, and a conclusion. Phase 1 activities included a literature review, review of existing products, a design team meeting, hardware and software review, solicitation of industry support, and creation of a preliminary design document. The design plan focuses on target audience, design principles, topic areas to be covered, product components, and design components. Appendices making up the bulk of the document contain letters of support from potential publishers, a list of literature review citations, an existing product review, and a summary of a design team meeting. The literature review contains bibliographic information and abstracts for 28 published resources and bibliographic information only for 76 resources. The existing product review lists and briefly describes 35 computer-based instruction and interactive videodisc systems, 57 videotapes and related media products, and 46 printed materials.
