Annotated Bibliography for Developing Oral Proficiency in Second and Foreign Languages.
Walz, Joel
This annotated bibliography contains references to articles and books that provide teachers with specific techniques to use in class to develop their students' oral proficiency. The items cited can be obtained from any good college or university library. Most of the publications have appeared since 1970, and the works cited pertain directly to the teaching of foreign languages. Each of the works describes at least five different techniques designed to elicit speech from students, and each describes elicitation procedures in detail. All ideas described involve communication. Techniques are classified according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' proficiency guidelines (novice, intermediate, advanced, superior). An introductory section provides the teacher with specific steps for optimal use of the bibliography's content for a given student or student group. Citations are also indexed by author and subject.
