This document reviews literature which analyzes factors of adolescent drug use/abuse and the effectiveness of various drug abuse prevention programs. After a brief introduction to the topic of drug abuse, 16 terms such as "adolescence" and "drug abuse" are defined. Ten papers and articles on the topic of motivations and factors for drug use are presented. Ten articles on the effects of peer and parental influence on adolescent drug use are included. Ten articles and papers on specific program models for drug education are presented. Seven articles on evaluation and effectiveness of drug education and prevention programs are included. A review of the literature is included which presents these conclusions: (1) adolescent drug use is on the increase; (2) factors motivating and influencing adolescent drug use include the need to escape, boredom, a desire to get high, peer influence, and parent influence; (3) the educator may in the best position to help, since students spend so much of their time in school; (4) educators are increasing the adolescents' knowledge about drugs (which may only increase curiosity about drugs), but they are not positively influencing the attitudes and behavior of their students; (5) newest models appear to be emphasizing decision making skills, attitudes toward drugs, and values; (6) many of the programs studied lacked the long-term, longitudinal studies that were necessary in determining program effectiveness; (7) funding and testing procedures were factors that interfered with program effectiveness; and (8) the need for effective drug prevention programs is vitally important if there are to be significant changes in the lives of today's adolescents. Eight recommendations for drug education prevention programs are presented. (ABL)
