Research with the Attitudes towards Disabled Persons Scales (ATDP) 1960-1985.
Yuker, Harold E.; Block, J. R.
The monograph provides a review of research studies over the past 25 years which have made use of the Attitude Toward Disabled Persons (ATDP) Scale. The report focuses on pertinent information about the scales, their psychometric properties, and the multitude of ways they have been used. An introductory chapter looks briefly at the history of the ATDP, the development of the scales, scale administration, scoring, interpretation of ATDP scores, and normative data. The second chapter looks at reliability and validity of the instrument with separate sections on validity for scores of nondisabled persons (including their attitudes toward specific disabilities) and validity for scores of disabled persons (separated out by type of disability, extent of disability, and age at onset). The last chapter examines characteristics of the scales and applications in the areas of social desirability of respondents' attitudes, acquiescence, faking, factorial structure, effects of such modifications as changes in wording, disability versus handicap, specific disabilities, and translations of the ATDP into foreign languages. A bibliography of about 370 items is included as are appendices providing means and reliability data and three forms of the ATDP Scale. (DB)
