For some time now, school boards, Ministries of Education, and the popular media have been expressing concerns about failing boys and how best to meet their needs, framing these concerns in terms of a crisis in which boys are the "new disadvantaged". This perspective does not provide an accurate representation of the problem and, in fact, detracts from deepening our understanding of which boys are actually at risk. It is often taken for granted that boys are innately different from girls, but in fact there is far more overlap than separation between the sexes in terms of brain-sex differences We know that class, race, and other factors such as sexuality, geographical location, and disability intersect with gender in significant and meaningful ways. This is not to deny that a problem exists. But we need to make a commitment to engage more with research-based evidence that is not analyzed solely in terms of gender. (Contains 15 endnotes.)
