Illinois Community College Board
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, online/Internet-based courses became an increasingly common method of instructional delivery at community colleges, which offer a convenient and cost-effective way to earn college credits, certificates, and degrees. Due to the pandemic, online/Internet-based courses expanded unprecedentedly in fiscal year 2021. As COVID-19 receded in fiscal year 2022, online enrollment decreased from fiscal year 2021 but was still significantly higher in comparison to the pre-pandemic online enrollment. Illinois community colleges reported a total of 162,062 headcount enrollments in online credit courses during fiscal year 2024. Data for this report derive from the Illinois Community College Board's (ICCB) Centralized Data System and, specifically, the Annual Student Enrollment and Completion (A1) submission and Course Enrollment and Resources (SU/SR) submission.
