2022-2023: The State of Social Work Education in the United States--Summary of the CSWE Annual Survey of Social Work Programs
Council on Social Work Education
Initiated in 1952, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Annual Survey illuminates the state of social work education including enrollment and graduation trends, and the student experience. This annual state of social work education report provides a comprehensive overview of Baccalaureate, Master's, Practice Doctorate, and PhD in social work programs. Programmatic data are from academic year 2022-23 whereas graduation data are from academic year 2021-2022. Graduation data provided valuable information about the progression of students through their social work programs to graduation during the 2021-22 academic year. The 2022-23 annual survey was disseminated in two phases. Part One of the survey entailed an extensive quantitative examination of student and program statistics across the four program levels: (1) baccalaureate (BSW); (2) master's (MSW); (3) practice doctorate (DSW); and (4) research doctorate (PhD), based on data for the 2022-23 academic year. Part Two of the CSWE Annual Survey focused on the dedicated faculty, the bedrock of social work education. This phase of the survey captured the experiences of full-time faculty, differentiating experiences based on variables such as race/ethnicity, gender, license types, highest earned degree, license held, and salary. Furthermore, the survey collected program data in relation to variables such as Carnegie classification, region, and state, unveiling trends and insights inherent to the diverse landscape of social work programs.
