New York Urban League, Inc., NY.
The social and economic status of blacks in New York City is the subject of this Urban League report, which has five major parts. Part I is an executive summary of the report. Part II provides a demographic profile of the black community. Data are presented on population size, the geographic distribution of blacks, age distribution, marital status, family and household characteristics, income, poverty, employment, and education. The focus of Part III is on the status of health, education, employment, housing, and social services as they affect the black community. The effects of recent social policy changes and economic reverses are described. Part IV presents recommendations for changes in health support funding and services, education, employment, housing, and social services. Finally, Part V discusses responses of the black community to its problems. The efforts of eight black self-help groups and the Urban League itself are described. (KH)
