Significant contractual provisions in negotiating faculty workload were identified, using data on over 300 faculty contracts, 273 of which were in force on January 1, 1980. Individual campuses covered by these agreements numbered over 650. The following contractual workload provisions were assessed: workload credit hour teaching, load, overload teaching limits and compensation, department chairperson released time provisions and compensation, and union business released time provisions. Findings include the following: over 80 percent of the contracts place specific limits on workload ranging from 19 to 37 credit hours per academic year; approximately 25 percent of the agreements had specific negotiated credit hour limits placed on teaching overload; approximately 17 percent of the agreements specified a limit on the number of credit hours that may be taught during summer sessions; and released time for union business was specified in 24 percent of the agreements.
