Located at the southeastern corner of the state and bordered by Arizona and Mexico, Imperial County makes up Region 6 of the California Migrant Education Program. Using the Migrant Student Record Transfer System as a data base, a study examined the 1977 flow patterns of migrant students from, to and within the state and each region. This region showed an increase in overall student enrollment, countering the general pattern statewide. Intrastate students dominated the California migrant student scene; the same held true for the county. In all, 114 migrant students entered the region from another state and 4,055 entered from within the state. Eighty-seven percent of the intrastate students came from other county schools. Departing the state were 113 students; 4,048 intrastate students left Region 6 schools. Grade level summaries showed that 2,918 intrastate students in grades K-6 departed, 403 intrastate students in grades 7-8 departed, and 727 intrastate high school students departed. Over 4,500 students did not move during 1977. Comparison of the records from 1975, 1976 and 1977 showed that between 1975 and 1976 there was a 20% increase in the number of nonmobile students, but in 1977 this decreased by 9%. In the years between 1975 and 1977 intrastate student movements within a given region increased from 88% to 92%.
