Presented in approximately 315 tables are statistics on the number of handicapped public school pupils in the U.S. (1970) for each of nine impairing conditions as well as numbers of schools and teachers providing special instruction. Noted is collection of data from a survey sample of 2,000 local public elementary and secondary schools representing the 81,000 schools in U. S. systems with enrollment of over 300 students. Reported for the speech impaired, learning disabled, mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, hard of hearing, deaf, crippled, partially sighted, and blind in 35 tables (for each condition) are the following data: numbers of pupils reported by principals; numbers of schools with handicapped pupils; numbers of pupils with each impairment in special classes, regular classes, and in individualized programs with special teachers; numbers of schools providing special classes, regular classes, and individualized programs; and numbers of teachers providing special instruction for each handicapping condition. Each set of data presented is tabulated in terms of instructional level (elementary, junior high, and high school), enrollment size (599 or less, 600 to 999, and 1,000 or more students), and school location (cities with 100,000 or more population, metropolitan areas beyond the cities; and areas beyond the 130 largest cities).
