Visual-Verbal Narrative Analysis: Practicalities, Possibilities, and Challenges in Transdisciplinary Visual Journal Research. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Kelly W. Guyotte
Sage Research Methods Cases
Upon returning to graduate school in 2010, I became captivated by the visual journal both as a student and as an instructor. Visual journals are hybrids of the artist's sketchbook and the writer's reflective journal and provide opportunities for individuals to explore various modes of expression encompassed within both visual and verbal realms. My doctoral dissertation study explores conceptions of professional and creative identities of students enrolled in a transdisciplinary design studio. Student visual journals as well as focus group transcriptions, course documents, field notes, and student and instructor reflections comprise my diverse and complex data set. This case study stems from my dissertation research and explores the challenges and possibilities of using multimodal approaches in narrative research. I present one analytic method, visual-verbal narrative analysis, which seeks to place equal emphasis on visual and verbal data while also attending to the relationship between these two expressive modes. Through this analytic process, the researcher attends to the various texts through a rigorous yet flexible process which equitably addresses visual-verbal representations of experience.
