Involving Online Doctoral Students in the Journal Publication Process: A Qualitative Research Study. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Claretha Hughes
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study provides an account of a 3-year research project that examined expectations of online graduate students. The two goals of this case are to explore opportunities and challenges of engaging online doctoral students as student co-researchers in the journal publication process and to describe how to conduct qualitative research using transcript analysis. The case sheds light on the particular complexities of conducting and completing research with doctoral students who complete all their coursework online. Situational and communication problems were exposed. The student co-researchers were asked to focus on the study's literature review because this is an area with which doctoral students are known to struggle and where they can contribute within their research experience and study and time constraints. Four key practical lessons were learned as a result of this project: (1) Read the literature and be proficient in the method that you are using to write a literature review and/or analyze data, (2) Be patient with doctoral students even if they are supposed to be the best students, (3) Distance does not have to be a problem with online students, and (4) Learning occurs through participation.
