Noting that observation forms the basis of all developmentally appropriate programming, this videotape helps new and experienced early childhood educators learn about children so they can individualize their program; evaluate programs so adjustments can be made to the environment, the curriculum, or both; and measure children's progress and their acquisition of new skills. The tape, appropriate for both self-instruction or group training, describes objective observation techniques, how to apply them, and then presents several practice observations. It includes segments on: biased reporting; learning about each child; measuring children's progress; evaluating a program; and observation segments featuring a water table scene, story time, and family dining. The accompanying guide to the videotape is divided into four sections. Section 1 of the guide presents the videotape script in its entirety so that trainers can refer to the tape in order to find answers to questions, and use specific text as a springboard for content-related discussions. Section 2 provides suggested approaches for presenting the videotape, including questions and ideas to discuss.
