Secret Wounds: Working with Child Observers of Family Violence.
Banerjee Associates, Skillman, NJ.
Noting that children who witness family violence, but are not direct victims of the violence, are frequently forgotten, this 33-minute video and complementary written materials provide a highly flexible program designed to address the multiple needs of these children with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of experiences. The first part of the video will help professionals and others understand some of the common issues and family dynamics of domestic violence, with emphasis on the effects it has on child observers. The accompanying written materials will help children build skills in the areas of socialization, problem-solving and self-concept, as well as heal some of the hurt. The second part of the video is for professional helpers to use in varied settings with one child or groups of children. The primary audience for this part is the children themselves; it provides a series of animated vignettes based on drawings by children, which serve as triggers for discussion or activities with children. Companion materials are a leader's guide describing specific objectives of the video and the program as a whole, and activity worksheets dealing with a range of childhood emotions, including fear, self-concept, anger, and affective responses.
