These hearings focused on various topics and issues related to the fiscal year 1985 budget request of $1.5 billion for the National Science Foundation (NSF), which represents a 13 percent increase over the 1984 level, as well as on NSF policies. Witnesses, representing government or scientific and technical organizations not directly part of the NSF adminsistration, who presented testimony and/or prepared statements included: Edward Knapp (NSF director); Lewis Branscomb (chairman, National Science Board); Mary Good; Anna Harrison; Robert Rosenzweig; Russell Drew; Henry Aaron; Joe Wyatt; Ronnie Flippo; Robert Kersten; Robert Baker; Frank Press; J. Thomas Ratchford; Donald Glower; Myron Tribus; and Richard Nicholson (accompanied by Carl Hall). Among the areas considered by these individuals were: overall research priorities of the NSF; supercomputers and proposed centers for cross-disciplinary research in engineering; university instrumentation and scientific equipment needs; science and mathematics education; and engineering education. Highlights for the FY 1985 budget request for specific NSF programs (such as mathematical and physical sciences, engineering, and scientific, technological and international affairs) are included.
