Peer reviewedHuynh, Huynh – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1990
False positive and false negative error rates were studied for competency testing when failing examinees are permitted to retake the test. Formulas are provided for the beta-binomial and Rasch models. Estimates based on these models are compared for six data sets from the South Carolina Basic Skills Assessment Program. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWainer, Howard – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1990
It is suggested that some of the technology applied to state Scholastic Aptitude Test scores to measure states' educational performance (particularly use of a truncated Gaussian model) may make it possible to adjust National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores to make inferences about state educational progress possible. (SLD)

Einhorn, Celia – MultiMedia Schools, 1999
Describes the New Mexico High School Supercomputing Challenge, a year-long project sponsored by New Mexico Technet, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and other statewide institutions that engages high school students, teachers, and professionals in complex scientific problem-solving that include written reports, mathematical models, and…

Peer reviewedHolland, Paul W.; Wainer, Howard – Applied Measurement in Education, 1990
Two attempts to adjust state mean Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores for differential participation rates are examined. Both attempts are rejected, and five rules for performing adjustments are outlined to foster follow-up checks on untested assumptions. National Assessment of Educational Progress state data are determined to be more accurate.…

Bock, R. Darrell; Mislevy, Robert J. – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1981
California Assessment Program's application of matrix sampling and item response curve theory to the scaling and reporting of state assessment data is described. It is designed to express educational outcomes in an efficient and interpretable form that is both immediately informative and suited to analysis over extended periods of time.…

Peer reviewedDesai, Anand; You, Min-Bong – Evaluation Review, 1992
Effects of Ohio's mandatory seat belt law on seat belt use, number of car accidents, and number of fatal and severe injuries were evaluated for January 1982 through March 1988. The monthly average number of accident victims was 2,002. Implications for public policy formulation and implementation are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedYen, Wendy M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1993
Results from the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program for 5,392 elementary school students and from the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (multiple choice) for a national sample are used to explore local item independence (LID) of test items. Some strategies are suggested for measuring LID in performance assessments. (SLD)

Peer reviewedNyankori, James C. O. – Journal of Negro Education, 1991
A study evaluating South Carolina's postsecondary enrollment patterns by race and institution estimated enrollment probabilities by races, institutional type, and year during the five years following court-ordered desegregation of public colleges and universities.
