A needs assessment concluded that trained personnel for correctional recreation were necessary to develop an understanding of the needs of prison inmates. The objectives of correctional recreation are: to assist the inmate in adjusting to institutional living; to develop interests and skills; and to make beneficial use of leisure time. (JN)

Because of the changing values of the American public, lawsuits in cases of personal injury are on the upswing. Recreation professionals must be prepared to encounter these situations by establishing accident reporting procedures and obtaining appropriate insurance. (RJG)

The American Correctional Association's Project CULTURE represents the first federally funded program designed to bring arts and leisure programs to inmates in long-term correctional institutions. In addition to Project CULTURE, a national survey on the status of the arts and recreation in correctional institutions was conducted. (JN)

The deplorable condition of recreation services for women inmates was examined in a national study. The study had a twofold purpose: to ascertain the status of prison recreation services for women, and to develop a set of recreation guidelines applicable to state correctional institutions for female offenders. A brief history of correctional recreation from the late 1800s through the time of the Attica riots is presented. Since the prison population is 60 to 70 percent Black, there is an obvious need for greater minority participation in the development of correctional recreation. (JN)
